USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) POLICY

Jurnal Masharif Al-Syariah: Jurnal Ekonomi dan Perbankan Syariah

Jurnal Masharif Al-Syariah: Jurnal Ekonomi dan Perbankan Syariah recognizes the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in scholarly writing and research. To maintain transparency, academic integrity, and scientific accountability, the journal enforces strict guidelines regarding the use of AI tools in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM).

1. AI Tools and Authorship Criteria

  • AI Cannot Be an Author: Generative AI tools, large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or automated writing software do not meet the authorship criteria. AI tools cannot take legal or ethical responsibility for the content, accuracy, integrity, or copyright compliance of a scientific paper.

  • Human Accountability: Authors are fully and sole responsible for the content of their manuscript, including the accuracy of data, literature references, theoretical arguments, and freedom from plagiarism or AI-generated factual errors.

2. Permitted Use of AI by Authors

Authors are permitted to use AI-assisted tools solely for improving the readability and language quality of their manuscript under the following conditions:

  • Scope of Use: AI may be used for spelling, grammar, stylistic editing, code formatting, or improving general phrasing.

  • Data Integrity: AI tools must not be used to fabricate research data, generate artificial empirical results, alter original figures/images, or draw unverified analytical conclusions.

3. Disclosure Requirement

  • If AI or AI-assisted technologies are used in the preparation, writing, data analysis, or graphic design of a manuscript, authors must explicitly declare their usage in the manuscript upon submission.

  • Where to Disclose: A formal statement titled "Declaration on the Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies" must be included in the manuscript (placed before the References section).

  • Disclosure Details: The statement must specify:

    1. The name and version of the AI tool/service used.

    2. The exact purpose for which the tool was applied.

  • Sample Statement:

"During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [Name of Tool/Version] in order to [state specific reason, e.g., improve English grammar and readability]. After using this tool, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as necessary and take full responsibility for the final content of the published article."

  • If no AI tools were used, no disclosure statement is required.

4. Use of AI in the Peer Review Process

  • Confidentiality Restrictions: Peer reviewers and editors are strictly prohibited from uploading submitted manuscripts, titles, abstracts, or raw data into Generative AI tools or online LLMs.

  • Protection of Intellectual Property: Uploading unpublished manuscripts to AI platforms breaches confidentiality agreements, infringes upon author copyright, and compromises the integrity of the peer-review process.

  • Reviewer Accountability: Peer-review reports must be written directly by the assigned human reviewers. The use of AI to generate peer-review comments or evaluation reports is strictly forbidden.
