Manuscript Type

Qanun Medika – Medical Journal Faculty of Medicine Muhammadiyah Surabaya welcomes scholarly manuscripts relevant to its aims and scope in medicine, clinical practice, biomedical sciences, public health, and other related health sciences. Manuscripts must demonstrate scientific rigor, originality, methodological appropriateness, and relevance to medical and health research.
In accordance with the principles of transparency in scholarly publishing outlined in the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing, developed by COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME, the journal provides information about the types of manuscripts considered for publication and the applicable editorial and peer-review procedures.

1. Original Research Articles

Original Research Articles report previously unpublished findings from original empirical investigations, including clinical studies, observational studies, experimental research, laboratory-based investigations, epidemiological research, public health studies, and other relevant medical or health science research.
Manuscripts should clearly describe the research objectives, study design, materials and methods, data collection procedures, statistical or analytical methods, results, discussion, conclusions, and relevant ethical approvals. Authors must report findings accurately and provide sufficient methodological information to support critical evaluation of the research.
Authors are encouraged to follow appropriate research reporting guidelines, such as CONSORT for randomized trials, STROBE for observational studies, PRISMA for systematic reviews, and STARD for diagnostic accuracy studies, where applicable. The journal's approach to research transparency and reporting is consistent with the COPE Core Practices on Data and Reproducibility.

2. Review Articles

Review Articles provide a critical and comprehensive synthesis of existing scientific literature on topics relevant to medicine and health sciences. They should identify the principal findings, evaluate the strength and limitations of available evidence, discuss inconsistencies or gaps in current knowledge, and explain the implications for research, clinical practice, or public health.
Authors must describe their literature selection and synthesis methods clearly enough for readers to assess the scope and reliability of the review. Review articles should offer a meaningful scholarly contribution rather than merely summarize previously published information.

3. Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Systematic Reviews use explicit, reproducible methods to identify, select, critically appraise, and synthesize evidence addressing a clearly defined research question. Meta-Analyses quantitatively combine results from eligible studies when the data and methodological characteristics support appropriate statistical synthesis.
Submissions should provide the review question, eligibility criteria, information sources, search strategy, study selection process, data extraction methods, risk-of-bias assessment, and synthesis methods. Meta-analyses should also describe the statistical methods, assessment of heterogeneity, and additional analyses where applicable.
Authors should follow the PRISMA reporting guideline when applicable and provide a registration number or protocol information when available or required by the relevant review standards. The journal encourages transparent reporting and reproducibility in accordance with the COPE Core Practices on Data and Reproducibility.

4. Case Reports and Case Series

Case Reports describe clinically significant individual cases that provide useful insights into diagnosis, treatment, clinical decision-making, unusual presentations, adverse events, or other important medical observations. Case Series describe a group of patients or cases with shared clinical characteristics or a relevant clinical observation.
Submissions should explain the clinical context, relevant history, diagnostic assessment, intervention or management, outcomes, and principal learning points. Authors must ensure that patient confidentiality is protected and obtain written informed consent for publication whenever required by applicable ethical standards and regulations.
Identifiable clinical information, photographs, imaging, and other patient-related materials must not be published without the appropriate authorization and consent. These requirements are consistent with the ethical oversight principles described in the COPE Core Practices on Ethical Oversight.

5. General Requirements for All Manuscript Types

All submissions must fall within the journal's aims and scope, be prepared according to the applicable author guidelines, and comply with the journal's policies on authorship, originality, plagiarism, research ethics, informed consent, competing interests, funding disclosure, and data transparency.
Manuscripts must not be under consideration by another journal at the same time. Authors must disclose any relevant prior publication, preprint, conference abstract, or overlapping manuscript so that the editorial team can assess whether the submission is eligible for consideration under the journal's publication policies.
Research involving human participants, identifiable patient information, or animals must comply with applicable ethical standards and institutional requirements. Authors must provide relevant ethics approval, informed consent, trial registration, or other documentation when required by the study design and applicable regulations.
All manuscript types are subject to editorial screening and the applicable review procedure. Acceptance is based on scientific merit, relevance, originality, methodological quality, ethical compliance, and the editorial assessment of the manuscript. The journal's review procedures and any exceptions for particular manuscript categories should be transparently described in accordance with the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.

6. Editorial Discretion

The editorial board reserves the right to determine whether a submission is suitable for the journal, request revisions, recommend a different manuscript category where appropriate, or reject submissions that do not meet the journal's standards. The journal may update its accepted manuscript categories and submission requirements as its editorial policies and scope develop.
Any changes to the manuscript categories or related editorial procedures will be communicated transparently through the journal website and author guidelines. This approach follows the transparency principles established in the COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.
