Objective
This study aimed to analyse the effect of emotional exhaustion on nurses’ performance, with resilience as a mediating variable, among nurses at the Cilincing Regional General Hospital in North Jakarta.
Design/Methodology
This study employed a quantitative approach, with primary data obtained through questionnaires distributed to 97 nurses. The analytical method used was structural equation modelling (SEM) based on partial least squares (PLS), utilising SmartPLS software to test the direct and indirect influences between the variables.
Findings
The results of this study indicate that emotional exhaustion has a significant negative effect on resilience, whereas resilience has a significant positive effect on nurse performance. However, emotional exhaustion did not have a significant direct effect on nurse performance. The results also indicated that resilience significantly mediated the effect of emotional exhaustion on nurse performance.
Practical Implications
These findings have implications for hospital management to strengthen the management of emotional exhaustion and the development of nurse resilience through psychological support, a supportive work environment, and coping enhancement programs to support nurses’ performance.
Originality/Value
The contribution of this study lies in examining resilience as a mediating mechanism that explains the relationship between emotional exhaustion and nurse performance in the context of a regional hospital, thereby broadening the understanding of the psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship.
