Abstract

Background: Pneumonia and stunting remain major health problems for children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Pneumonia is the leading cause of infectious death in children under five, while stunting reflects chronic malnutrition with long-term impacts on children's health and development. These two conditions are interconnected through mechanisms of infection and impaired nutritional status, and are influenced by social and environmental determinants, including exposure to cigarette smoke in the household. Although research on childhood pneumonia and stunting continues to grow, studies that comprehensively map research directions and trends, particularly in the context of LMICs, are still limited.

Objective:
This study aims to analyze the direction and trends of research on childhood pneumonia and stunting in low- and middle-income countries using a bibliometric analysis approach.

Methods: This research is a descriptive quantitative study using a bibliometric approach to research articles and review articles indexed in the Scopus database for the period 2015–2025. The analysis was conducted using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer software to evaluate publication trends, country contributions, keyword patterns, and scientific collaboration networks.

Result: The analysis shows a consistent increase in publications in recent years, with contributions from high-income countries dominating. The most prominent research themes include malnutrition, nutritional status, environmental risk factors, and exposure to secondhand smoke. Keyword mapping indicates a shift in research focus toward a more integrated approach to understanding the relationship between pneumonia and stunting in children.

Conclusion: Research on childhood pneumonia and stunting in LMICs shows progress toward a more comprehensive and multidimensional approach. Strengthening research capacity in LMICs and developing family- and community-based interventions are needed to support sustainable pneumonia and stunting prevention efforts.
