Abstract

This article examines secularism from an Islamic perspective by exploring its challenges and implications for religious life in Indonesia. Secularism, rooted in Western historical experience, is commonly understood as the separation between religion and worldly affairs, a notion that often contradicts Islamic teachings, which emphasize the integration of both dimensions. In Islam, secularism is viewed as an ideology without a theological foundation, as it prioritizes material aspects while neglecting spiritual values and the life hereafter. This study adopts a Qur’anic exegetical approach, including an analysis of verses such as Q.S. Al-Isra: 18, Q.S. Hud: 15–16, and Q.S. Al-Hadid: 20, which illustrate the dangers of excessive attachment to worldly life. The article also discusses the conceptual distinctions among secularism, secularization, and hubbu ad-dunya, or excessive love of the world, as well as their impact on Muslim societies, particularly in Indonesia. The findings indicate that understanding secularism is essential to prevent Muslims from separating religious values from social, political, and cultural life. This study is expected to contribute to the discourse on the relationship between religion and modernity within the context of Muslim societies.
