The Empowerment Leprosy`s Self Care Group (SCG) in Efforts to Minimize Disability Status

Abstrak

Introduction: Leprosy Self-Care Group (SCG) in Jember only 2, that were SCG in Jenggawah and Tempurejo sub district. Implementation of the SCG had been less than optimal in facilitating self-care leprosy clients, thus increasing the number of disabilities, treatment failure, and lead to social stigma and discrimination in society. Program innovations that would be introduced was their sense of self-help (self help group) as well as the empowerment of leprosy clients in making handicrafts to stimulate peripheral nerves, thereby decreasing the incidence of disability. Methods: The subjects in this community services were all of leprosy clients in SCG Jenggawah and Tempurejo. The method used in this activity were: (1) Training of self-care, peripheral nerve stimulation, and patient safety; (2) Training and mentoring manufacture innovative handicraft; Procurement of major equipment and supporting the manufacture of handicrafts; (3) Assistance packing of goods production; and Mentoring-establishing cooperation with the marketing of the product. Results: The results of this study had shown that: (1) Improved knowledge, attitudes and skills in performing self-care in clients with leprosy: eyes, hands, and feet; (2). Improving the skills in producing handicraft economically viable; Increased availability of the major tools and support tools in the production handicraft; (3). Increased innovation in packaging goods production; and (4). Improved network for the distribution of goods production. Conclusion: The conclusion from this study was prevention of contractures in clients with leprosy could be pursued with peripheral nerve stimulation through gymnastics activities and make crafts/handicraft.
