Correlation Between Knowledge And HIV/AIDS-Related Stigma Among Senior High School Students In Tanggul District Jember

Abstrak

Introduction: Many teenagers still do not have appropriate understanding about HIV/AIDS. This condition can lead to HIV/AIDS-related stigma which can be a barrier in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between knowledge and HIV/AIDS-related stigma among Senior High School Students in Tanggul District Jember. Method: The design of this study was correlation analytic with cross sectional approach. A total of 165 students from three senior high schools in Tanggul district were enrolled in this study by applying purposive sampling technique. Data were gathered in October 2015 by using questionnaires of HIV/AIDS knowledge and HIV/AIDS-related stigma. A chi-square test was performed to analyze the data. Result: The results revealed that 61.2% of respondents had good knowledge and 38.8% of respondents had less knowledge about HIV/AIDS. In terms of stigma, 52.1% of respondents did not have stigma and 47.9% of respondents had stigma toward HIV/AIDS. Chi-square test showed a significant correlation between knowledge and HIV/AIDS-related stigma (p=0.042, α=0.05). Respondents with less knowledge were more likely to have stigma toward HIV/AIDS (OR=1.92; 95% CI= 1.021-3.631). Conclusion: It indicates the importance of HIV/AIDS education programs to provide proper knowledge among high school students so that HIV/AIDS-related stigma can be reduced.
