Effect of Breastfeeding Odor Stimulation at Transition Period from Oro Gastric Tube to Total Oral Feeding on Premature Babies
Abstrak
Introduction: Feeding method with a naso/orogastrik is not facilitating the sensory motor experience to develop an oral feeding ability. That problem can affect the length of stay and it’s cost. The preventive intervention is necessary to suppress delays of oral feeding ability, such with breastfeeding odor stimulation that having similarity to the smell of amniotic fluid .Method: This study uses a nonequivalent posttest-only with control group design that include 30 premature babies, divided into 15 babies per group in perinatology unit. The intervention group received Breastfeeding odor stimulation, and a control group getting standard hospital procedures. Intervention is given in accordance with standard operating procedures that have been made and the results were taken by observation. Result: Research find that breastfeeding odor stimulation having affect to transition period from oro gastric tube to total oral feeding (t = -3.946, p = 0.001). Conclusion: Breastfeeding odor stimulation is expected to improve the oral feeding ability, thus reducing neonatal morbidity and mortality and improve breastfeeding outcomes on premature baby.
